- 08.01.06 - The Department of Chemistry Welcomes a New Assistant Professor
The Department of Chemistry welcomes its newest faculty member, Dr. Christy Landes.
Dr. Landes received her Ph.D. from Georgia Tech University under the supervision of
Prof. Mustafa A. El-Sayed, and did post-doctoral research at UT-Austin with Prof. Paul
Barbara. Dr. Landes' research interests encompass single molecule spectroscopy,
biophysical chemistry, and non-linear optics. More information about her research can
be found on her research web page.
- 05.12.06 - Professor to Host Workshop at Nanotechnology Conference
With research that will make an impact ranging from solar-cell technology to new and improved
packaging materials, one University of Houston professor is leading the way in a nanocoatings
conference that will bring academia, government and industry research into one venue. Associate
professor of chemistry and adjunct professor of chemical engineering, Rigoberto Advincula, will
lead a workshop and give a lecture at the conference.
- 03.15.06 - Targeted Drug Delivery Strikes Gold
Recently, Professor of Chemistry T. Randall Lee invented a unique targeted drug-delivery
system that incorporates the use of laser light to heat gold-based nanoparticles coated
with a drug-embedded polymer gel. When the hybrid nanoparticles are illuminated, they emit
heat, collapsing the surrounding gel and releasing the drug to the cancer target.
- 01.18.06 - Daugulis Receives 2006 Journal Award
Assistant Professor of Chemistry Olafs Daugulis was recently selected by the editorial
boards of Synlett and Synthesis as a 2006 Journal Awardee. Individuals chosen for this
award are defined by Synlett and Synthesis as promising young professors at the beginning
of their career.
