Graduate Assistantships

Graduate assistants are full-time graduate students who hold an appointment requiring such duties as classroom teaching, research, or other assigned academic responsibilities. The Department of Chemistry offers teaching assistantships, and many faculty members regularly employ research assistants. Please see the Graduate Assistant Tuition Fellowship Policy in the Graduate Catalog.

ALL students who are admitted into the Graduate Program in the Department of Chemistry are AUTOMATICALLY given a teaching assistantship. The monthly stipend for this assistantship is ~ $1900. Additionally, a full-time graduate assistantship qualifies the student for the Graduate Assistantship Tuition Fellowship (GATF), which covers nine (9) hours of tuition, the normal load for a graduate student.

Graduate Assistantship Tuition Fellowship (GATF)
This fellowship program provides an award equivalent to the tuition cost of nine (9) credit hours. The GATF program does not cover mandatory fees or course fees. A normal graduate student load is nine (9) credit hours. Refer to the UH Graduate Catalog for eligibility criteria.

In-State Tuition Waivers
The tuition waiver allows a student to pay tuition at the same rate as a Texas resident. All new graduate students qualify for in-state tuition waiver. In all but exceptional circumstances, continuing graduate students qualify for in-state tuition.

Fellowships
The Presidential, Cullen Endowed, and Stella L. Ehrhardt Memorial Fellowships

Presidential/Cullen/Ehrhardt Fellowships are available to the most outstanding graduate applicants to the Department of Chemistry at the University of Houston. These highly competitive fellowships provide a generous stipend for up to two years to supplement the Department’s normal graduate student monthly stipend and the University’s eligible full tuition remission. Fellowship recipients are required to provide service to the Department as research or teaching assistants and to demonstrate progress towards their PhD. Department of Chemistry applicants whose application files are complete by March 30th may be considered for the Fellowship.

A nominee for the Presidential/Cullen/Ehrhardt Fellowships will be chosen by the Department of Chemistry Graduate Committee based on the applicant’s academic record, especially in chemistry, physics, and mathematics, letters of recommendation from academic and/or industrial scientists, undergraduate research experience, including publication record, and GRE scores. The Graduate Committee will forward the departmental nominees to the Office of Graduate & Professional Studies, which will make the final decision on who receives the award.
