UH Chemist Wins Prestigious Award

Since joining the faculty in 1997, Eric Bittner has garnered numerous accolades, including a 2000 early CAREER Award from the National Science Foundation and a 2007 Guggenheim Fellow.
Bittner, professor of chemistry, adds another honor—the John and Rebecca Moores Professor—to his list of accomplishments.
Bittner’s nominator wrote that as a UH faculty member, "Professor Bittner’s seminal work on trajectory-base methods for performing quantum mechanical calculations has generated considerable excitement in the theoretical chemistry community."

Multidisciplinary Appeal of Research Reaps Reward for Arnold Guloy
Recognized worldwide for his pioneering research and creativity in the field of solid-state chemistry, Arnold M. Guloy, professor of chemistry, is well known for his breakthrough research into a first-time, low-density synthetic form of the chemical element germanium.
Guloy is universally viewed by his colleagues as a well-rounded, multidisciplinary collaborator, which played a large part in his earning the Excellence in Research and Scholarship Award for the professor rank.

'First-rate Communication Skills, Grantsmanship' Earn Second Honor for Halasyamani
Five years ago, P. Shiv Halasyamani was the recipient of the Excellence in Research and Scholarship Award for the assistant professor rank. This year, he received the award again for his work at the next level, as an associate professor of chemistry.
Having published more than 80 research papers, Halasyamani's "research accomplishments and publication record clearly distinguish him as one of the top young chemists of his generation," attested a colleague from Northwestern University. An associate from the University of Oxford who has known Halasyamani for more than a decade says, "I have been extremely impressed in the way in which he has developed into a front-line academic scientist. He is also an excellent communicator of his science both orally and in writing."

Excellent Funding Record, Research Contributions Lead to High Honor for Olafs Daugulis
A year ago, Olafs Daugulis won a pair of prestigious awards for his research into simplifying the process of forming compounds that can be used in many everyday products, such as pharmaceuticals and plastics. This year, the assistant professor of chemistry, has been rewarded with the Excellence in Research and Scholarship Award for the assistant professor rank.
His nomination form highlights Daugulis' "exceptional research contributions and…emergence as a leader and innovator in the fields of organometallic chemistry and synthetic organic chemistry." His nominator goes on to write that Daugulis "has distinguished himself both nationally and internationally as a highly insightful and remarkably creative young scientist."
